Dancing makes a big difference…
At Rooftop Studios, we have always believed that dance offers benefits far beyond the steps learned in the studio – and a recent BBC Future article has explored just how powerful even a few minutes of movement can be.
The article looks at research suggesting that dancing can improve concentration, encourage creativity, lift our mood and help us feel more energised. Remarkably, some of these benefits may be felt after a dance break lasting just five minutes.
One study involving schoolchildren found that a five-minute group dance activity positively affected their ability to focus, while the children also found dancing more enjoyable than other forms of aerobic exercise. Dance can engage the body and brain simultaneously as we listen to music, remember movements, coordinate our bodies and respond to rhythm. If that happens in five minutes, imagine the benefits of a full class!
It is something we see every day at Rooftop.
Learning choreography encourages students to listen, concentrate and persevere. Expressing themselves through movement gives them a creative outlet, while dancing alongside others develops teamwork, friendships and a sense of belonging.
There are, of course, plenty of physical benefits, too. Dance can help to develop strength, flexibility, balance, co-ordination and stamina – but its impact on confidence and emotional wellbeing can be just as important.
For some students, progress might mean mastering a challenging new sequence, passing an exam or stepping onto the stage in a full-scale production. For others, it may simply be finding the confidence to join in, express themselves and leave class with a smile on their face. Every one of those achievements matters.
The BBC article shares the wonderfully inclusive message that “every single body is a dancing body” – and we couldn’t agree more. At Rooftop Studios, our classes welcome students of different ages, abilities and aspirations. Whether someone dreams of a professional career, wants to develop their performance skills or simply loves moving to music, there is a place for them here.
So, the next time energy levels dip or a tricky task has you feeling stuck, why not put on a favourite song and take a five-minute dance break? It could be just what your body – and your brain – needs.
