Online classes to help keep kids – and adults – active during lockdown

Leading Stone Performing Arts Academy, Rooftop Studios, is set to bring its full programme of dance and performing arts classes in to living rooms via live video conferencing from April 6th 2020.

The teaching team is treating the first fortnight of ‘lockdown’ as an early Easter Break; planning lessons and testing systems ready to engage its students in the comfort of their own homes, and inviting non-students to join in the fun too. And it’s not just youngsters who can benefit from Rooftop’s extensive range of classes – which include baby dance, ballet for all ages and grades, tap, modern, street dance, jazz, commercial heels, LAMDA Drama and the studio’s popular Saturday Morning Stage Academy. Parent and Toddler classes, adult ballet & jazz dancing and ‘Silver Swans’ ballet for over-55s are also on the syllabus; as is an adult version of the studio’s brilliant ‘Vocal Smash’ singing troupe. Private online singing lessons and dance and drama coaching will also be available by prior arrangement.

Delivered by a team of teachers who are professional performers in their own right, the online classes will help students keep up with their performing arts education during though times, but will also have other important benefits, as studio director, Laura Keeling, explains:

“We’re living through unprecedented times and the health and mental wellbeing of everyone is paramount. We took the decision to close the studio over a week before lockdown was announced, to comply with social distancing guidance and protect our students and fantastic teaching team. However, the sadness with which we closed the doors and the reactions of our students – classes are as much a social gathering for these kids as they are about the dance and drama – meant we knew we had to do whatever we could to help them get through this.

“All people need to join in classes from their home is an internet connection, device/laptop, webcam and microphone. Our teachers, as performers, are all brilliant at delivering lessons in what can be a challenging format, and the test classes have been great. Our students are all very excited about classes starting up again and we can’t wait to welcome newbies, wherever they may be, to join in sessions.”

To tie in with the launch of the online classes, Rooftop Studios is offering the chance to join a trial class for free before registering for the whole course.
